Community social services provide a wide range of assistance to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds in communities across British Columbia.
Community social services workers help others every day by providing such services as: child care, employment and housing support for people with developmental disabilities, specialized services for immigrant families, services for First Nations families, support for women dealing with violence, substance abuse and addiction-related services and more...
Community social services matter because:
- They help make sure people don’t fall through the cracks when they have a special need or when they are facing a crisis in their lives;
- They make British Columbia communities healthier and safer;
- They strengthen British Columbia’s economy with millions of dollars spent in communities in wages and purchases;
March is Community Social Services Awareness Month!
Community Social Services Awareness month is a province-wide effort to raise awareness about the vital role of community social services play in our communities – by taking the message out to communities across British Columbia!
Community Social Services Awareness month activities include:
- Coordinating community social services month proclamations by municipal councils across British Columbia;
- A community social services walk and rally in Victoria on March 26;
- Local promotional activities in many communities across British Columbia throughout the month of March;
- Advertisements in local newspapers and on radio.
To date, 27 municipal councils across British Columbia have proclaimed March as Community Social Services Awareness Month, or recognized community social service workers in some fashion. This includes the city councils of Victoria, Vancouver, Prince George, Trail, Whistler, Burnaby, Kelowna and Richmond. The province of British Columbia has also proclaimed March 2011 “Community Social Services Month.”
